Three-Ball Sinks Cowboys in Loss at Utah State

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 28, 2026) – The Wyoming Cowboys could not overcome the three-point shooting of Utah State in 94-62 loss inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Wednesday evening. The Aggies are receiving votes in both the Associated Press and Coaches’ Poll, as the loss drops the Cowboys to 12-9 overall and 3-7 in conference play.


“We put a plan in place that we were going to go zone for a full forty and get them off early and it didn’t happen and we were dying on that hill tonight and see if our guys could figure it out and hats off to Utah State,” UW head coach Sundance Wicks Said. “We have to respond and have a plan of attack heading into CSU and the Border War.”

 


Utah State finished the game with 13 three pointers and shot 55 percent from the field on the night. The Pokes were held to 35 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the arc. Both teams grabbed 36 rebounds on the night with Wyoming adding 16 on the offensive glass. Utah State added 21 points off turnovers.

Wyoming was led in scoring by Leland Walker with 24 points for his 16th game in double-figures this season and the 69th of his career. Walker has scored 20 or more points in five games this season and 19 in his career. Nasir (Naz) Meyer, who returned from injury added 12 points for his 14th game in double-figures this season. Both Walker and Meyer added a team-high five rebounds along with Abou Magassa. Khaden Bennett added nine points and had four assists to lead the team.

The Pokes would hit their first two shots of the game, but the Aggies would then grab the momentum with a 13-0 run to build a 15-4 lead four and a half minutes into the game. Damarion Dennis ended the run with a and-one play.

Utah State would hit their fourth three of the game for a 20-9 lead on the Pokes, but Walker responded with a three for the Pokes with under 14 minutes left for the Brown and Gold’s first of the game.

Wyoming made it a 26-18 game thanks to threes from Bennett and Meyer with under 10 minutes left in the half. The Aggies responded with a four-point play to push the lead back to double-digits. Utah State added a quick 8-0 run and build the lead to 40-23 with six minutes left in the half.

The Aggies would take a 50-28 lead into the half shooting 59 percent from the field in the frame with eight three pointers.

Early second half turnovers and transition dunks by Utah State helped the Aggies build a 62-30 lead. The Pokes went on 7-0 run for a 62-37 game with 15 minutes remaining with buckets in transition, in the paint and via the three ball.

The Aggies would continue to make baskets at an effective clip and enjoyed a game-high lead of over 30 points halfway through the half. Utah State shot 52 percent in the second frame and took the contest 94-62.

The Aggies were led by Kolby King with 20 points. He was 4-of-7 from behind the arc in the contest. Mason Falslev added 11 points along with Garry Clark and MJ Collins, the leading scorer in the MW added 12 points.

The Cowboys return home for the first edition of the Border War on Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. start against Colorado State.
