By the Numbers: From Lightning Delay to Late Surge, Wyoming Finds a Way to Win
LARAMIE, Wyo. - For more than three-quarters of Saturday's game, the numbers and performance by Wyoming were lacking.
Northern Colorado outgained the Cowboys, controlled the football longer, and carried a 13-7 lead into the fourth quarter. But the numbers that ultimately mattered most belonged to Wyoming: two interceptions and 14 unanswered fourth-quarter points in a 21-13 victory at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium.

Here is a closer look at Wyoming's win by the numbers:
14 - Wyoming entered the final quarter trailing 13-7 before finally finding the offensive rhythm it had been searching for.
Tyler Hughes connected with wide receiver Charlie Coenen for a 15-yard touchdown with 3:44 remaining, giving Wyoming a 14-13 lead. After the Cowboys' defense got the ball back, Hughes found tight end Kyle Frendt for an 18-yard touchdown with 1:44 left to put the game away.
Wyoming produced 135 yards on 23 offensive plays in the fourth quarter, while Northern Colorado managed just 3 yards on 11 plays.
2 - Safety Jones Thomas intercepted UNC QB Kenny Lueth twice.
Thomas finished with five tackles, a pass breakup, and two interceptions. Wyoming's defense recorded three sacks, seven tackles for loss, three pass breakups, and four quarterback hurries.
304 - The Cowboys didn't light up the stat sheet offensively.
Wyoming finished with 304 total yards, including 155 rushing and 149 passing. Northern Colorado finished with 346 yards, gaining 206 through the air and 140 on the ground.
The Cowboys averaged 5.1 yards per play compared with UNC's 5.6.
18-of-26 - Hughes completed 18 of 26 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Both touchdown passes came in the fourth quarter.
He also contributed with his legs, rushing seven times for 35 yards, including a 14-yard run during Wyoming's fourth-quarter comeback.
80 - Markell Holman provided Wyoming's most consistent production on the ground, carrying 11 times for 80 yards, an average of 7.3 yards per carry.
He also led Wyoming in receptions, catching five passes for 27 yards, giving him a team-high 107 all-purpose yards.
2 - Wyoming made its comeback harder than it needed to be.
The Cowboys fumbled twice and lost both. Samuel "Tote" Harris and Holman each lost a fumble, including Holman's early in the fourth quarter with Wyoming still trailing 13-7.
UNC had zero fumbles.
The defense prevented Northern Colorado from turning either takeaway into points.
3 - Wyoming's pass rush got home three times for 19 yards in losses.
Esaia Bogar recorded a full sack, Jack Dunkley had another and Ethan Stuhlsatz and Steven Perez combined for one. The Cowboys also produced seven tackles for loss totaling 26 yards.
45 - UNC's biggest offensive strike came when Lueth connected with Marcus Mozer for a 45-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.
It accounted for more than one-fifth of Northern Colorado's 206 passing yards and helped send the Bears into halftime with a 10-7 lead.
42 Minutes - Lightning Delay
By our calculations, the lightning delay lasted approximately 42 minutes. The delay occurred at the 12:25 mark in the fourth quarter, while officials were reviewing a fumble recovery. Ultimately, UNC won the fumble recovery, but couldn't capitalize on it. The rest was history.
28:53 - Northern Colorado held the ball for 31:07, compared with Wyoming's 28:53.
The Bears also held slight advantages in first downs, 17-16, and total offense, 346-304. Wyoming went 5-of-12 on third down, while UNC converted 4-of-12.
21-13 - Wyoming didn't dominate the box score. The Cowboys were outgained, lost two fumbles, and trailed an FCS opponent entering the fourth quarter.
But when the game reached its decisive moments in the fourth quarter, Wyoming flipped nearly every meaningful number. The Cowboys scored twice in the fourth quarter and kept Northern Colorado off the scoreboard for the final 15 minutes.
The result was a 21-13 win, Wyoming's first victory of the 2026 season.
