LARAMIE, Wyo. (Nov 22, 2024) -- Saturday will be an emotional day for all seniors and graduates who will walk onto Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium for the final time.

During Senior Day pregame ceremonies, public address announcer Josh Hunter will state Caleb Driskill's name as he exits the High Altitude Performance Center. He will be greeted by head coach Jay Sawvel, who will embrace him.

Caleb will likely stay strong and not shed a tear, but his mother, Rebecca, will likely have tears running down her face in the lower east stands.

This scenario will be repeated for each senior.

For Caleb Driskill, a senior fullback for the University of Wyoming, playing for his home state has given him a lot of pride. As Senior Day approaches, the Gillette native reflects on his time wearing the iconic brown and gold and the memories that have shaped his career.

Choosing Wyoming

Driskill’s path to Wyoming began with offers from several colleges around the area, including the entire Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Northern Colorado, and North Dakota. Some larger schools offered him walk-on opportunities, but his heart was set on representing his home state.

“The only difficult part about choosing Wyoming was that they wanted me to play fullback after playing defense my whole career,” Driskill shared. “But at the end of the day, I’m a Wyoming kid. This is where I wanted to play, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

For Driskill, stepping onto the field at War Memorial Stadium has always been special.

“This is the only university in the state,” he said. “When you wear the brown and gold, you’re representing where you’re from. People around the country might not know where Wyoming is, but for us, it’s everything. It’s our state, and we get to represent it on the field.”

Memorable Moments

One moment stands above the rest for Driskill: the Cowboys’ thrilling comeback win against Texas Tech in the 2023 season opener.

“I scored a touchdown in that game, and it was surreal,” he said. “It was one of the craziest games I’ve ever been a part of, and I never thought I’d score here. That moment was really special.”

Mentorship and Leadership

Caleb credits his success to the mentors who guided him during his early years at Wyoming, particularly tight ends and fullbacks coach Shannon Moore.

“Coach Moore has been incredible. He’s been recruiting Wyoming for a long time, and he’s always gone above and beyond for us,” Driskill said. “And guys like Treyton Welch, Jackson Marcotte, and Parker Christensen—they showed us how to prepare mentally and physically for this level. Watching Jackson balance law school, football, and overcoming injuries was inspiring.”

Now a leader himself, Driskill is optimistic about the future of Wyoming’s tight end and fullback room. He highlighted teammates like Isaac Schoenfeld, Clay Nanke, Jake Wilson, and Cooper Mailand as rising stars who will carry the torch.

A Personal Connection

Off the field, Driskill also had a life-changing moment: meeting his fiancée, Maddi Chance (Lander, WY), a former Cowgirl soccer player.

“We met during freshman year, and she’s been a huge part of my life and career,” he said. “It’s great having a partner who understands the challenges of being a student-athlete.”

What’s Next?

Driskill is completing his master’s degree while exploring job opportunities. He and his fiancée Maddi plan to stay in Laramie for another year as she finishes school.

“I’m just taking it one step at a time,” Driskill said. “We’ll see where work takes us, but I’m grateful for everything Wyoming has given me.”

As he prepares to step onto the field one last time at War Memorial Stadium, Driskill’s journey from a small-town kid in Gillette to a key contributor for the Cowboys results from hard work, pride, and the power of representing the 307.
