Today marks head coach Jay Sawvel's inaugural spring practice since assuming the helm from retired head coach Craig Bohl earlier this year. Sawvel is establishing his commitment to cultivating relationships and nurturing holistic development among his players. This focus on fostering a supportive culture is particularly crucial in light of the prevalence of the transfer portal. Even Craig Bohl, Sawvel's predecessor, acknowledged the need to adapt his leadership approach, recognizing the importance of connecting with players on a more personal level.
During a recent press conference, Sawvel discussed his coaching philosophy, emphasizing the importance of developing strong bonds with players and creating a positive team culture.
"Relationships with players and relating to players...I think that's probably the thing I do best," "I'm in their world," he stated.
Sawvel highlighted his hands-on approach to coaching, which includes regular interactions with players during offseason workouts and weight room sessions. By immersing himself in players' daily routines, he aims to better understand their needs and provide support where necessary. Leading by example, and staying in the trenches with his team is exactly what he has done since taking over. Taking a Pulse: Sawvel emphasizes the importance of actively engaging with his players beyond the confines of formal meetings or office settings. He understands that amidst the routine responses of "I'm good" or "things are fine," there lies the potential for deeper connections and insights into his players' well-being. By making a deliberate effort to check in with his players, he demonstrates a genuine concern for their welfare. He recognizes that within the repetitiveness of daily interactions, there exists a rare opportunity to identify when someone might be struggling or in need of support. This intentional approach not only fosters a stronger coach-player relationship but also positions himself to offer assistance or guidance when necessary. By immersing himself in the players' world, he exhibits a level of empathy and understanding that transcends his role as head coach, creating an environment where players feel valued and supported beyond the football field.
"Maybe I need to ask a couple more questions or maybe I need to just say, hey, when you're done working out, come up and see me. It's very intentional," Sawvel said.
When asked about his goals for spring practice, Sawvel emphasized the importance of fundamental improvement and procedural discipline.
"I want to see us fundamentally develop as a football team at all positions," he explained.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Sawvel expressed excitement about the team's potential and the opportunity to compete at a high level. With a dedicated coaching staff and a roster of motivated players, he's confident in the team's ability to achieve success on the field.
Oh and one more thing: There wasn't much transfer portal action for Wyoming after the announcement of a new head coach before the end of the 2023 season...which speaks volumes for the trust that the team has in their new leader.
