Wyoming will look to put last week's shutout loss behind it when the Cowboys face San Jose State on Friday night at CEFCU Stadium.

The Cowboys (2-3, 1-1 Mountain West) enter the contest following a 28-0 loss at North Dakota State, while the Spartans (3-2, 1-0 MW) are coming off a 20-16 road victory over Hawai‘i.

Friday's matchup marks Wyoming's fourth road game in its first six contests, something the program hasn't experienced since 2003, when Joe Glenn was the Cowboys' head coach.

Wyoming is averaging 14.2 points per game through five contests, compared to San Jose State's 22.6. The Cowboys have also struggled to generate consistent offense, averaging 293.2 yards per game, nearly 100 fewer than the Spartans.

Head coach Jay Sawvel's team will try to get back in the win column against a San Jose State squad led by Ken Niumatalolo in his third season.

Statistics are per game through five contests, according to Wyoming's official game notes.

San Jose State holds a considerable advantage in the passing game, averaging 112.6 more yards through the air per contest. Wyoming, meanwhile, has been more productive on the ground and is allowing three fewer points per game.

Players to Watch

Wyoming quarterback Tyler Hughes: The senior has completed 66 of 112 passes for 708 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions. Getting the passing game going will be important for an offense that has struggled to score consistently.

Wyoming running backs Markell Holman and Samuel "Tote" Harris: Holman leads the Cowboys with 260 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 46 carries. Harris is close behind with 257 yards and two scores on 52 attempts. The two have combined for 517 yards on the ground.

San Jose State quarterback Luke Weaver: Weaver has completed 106 of 171 passes for 1,278 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. He threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns in last week's victory over Hawai‘i.

San Jose State running back Jabari Bates: Bates leads the Spartans with 487 rushing yards on 104 carries, averaging 97.4 yards per game. His production gives San Jose State another offensive option beyond Weaver's passing ability.

San Jose State wide receiver Carson Clark: Clark has caught 29 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns. He had 74 receiving yards and a touchdown against Hawai‘i.

Defensive Notes

Despite last week's loss, Wyoming recorded seven tackles for loss against North Dakota State, tying its season high. The Cowboys also broke up five passes, all in the first half.

Linebacker Ethan Stuhlsatz leads Wyoming with 39 tackles in four appearances. He recorded 10 against North Dakota State, his third double-digit tackle performance of the season.

Fellow linebacker Steven Perez also had 10 tackles against the Bison, a career high. Perez has recorded at least six tackles in four consecutive games and has 30 on the season.

Safety Jones Thomas enters Friday's contest five tackles away from 100 for his Wyoming career. He has 34 tackles this season and leads the Cowboys with two interceptions.

Defensive end Donnie Wingate recorded his first sack as a Cowboy against North Dakota State, while defensive tackle Jayden Williams has registered a sack in consecutive games.

Series History

Wyoming holds an 8-7 advantage in the all-time series, which began on November 7, 1959. Friday will be the 16th meeting between the programs.

The Spartans have enjoyed more success since joining the Mountain West, holding a 6-2 advantage in conference matchups.

Wyoming is 4-4 all-time in San Jose, and Sawvel has a 1-1 record against the Spartans as the Cowboys' head coach.
