LARAMIE, Wyo. Nov. 1, 2024) – The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team opened play in the 2024-25 season Friday night with an exhibition contest victory over Chadron State inside the Arena-Auditorium. All available Cowgirls played in the 78-39 win.
The Cowgirls played strong defense in the exhibition, especially in the second and third quarters. Wyoming also shared the ball effectively, assisting on nearly 68-percent of its made field goals against the Eagles. UW shot a strong percentage from the field and held Chadron State to just 1-of-18 shooting from 3-point range.
“I thought we started a little slow, but no matter how old you are, even if its an exhibition, the first game there’s always some jitters,” said Head Coach Heather Ezell postgame.
“It’s the first time turning the lights on, having the fans there and those first couple of minutes I thought we needed to settle in and understand what we were doing. Once we started figuring that out, I thought our offense was running really well and once we started to communicate on the defense end, our defense stepped up as well.”
Allyson Fertig led all scorers on the night as she posted a double-double. Tess Barnes and Malene Pedersen had strong offensive games and shot well from the field. A total of seven Cowgirls scored off the bench on the night.
Things tip off for real Monday as Colorado comes to town for a 5:30 p.m., season-opening contest inside the Arena-Auditorium.
