The 2025 season is underway for the Wyoming Volleyball squad. Fans will recognize some familiar faces on the squad for UW.
Twelve of Wyoming’s letter winners will be returning to the team, including Junior Outside Hitter Paige Lauterwasser, who was named to the Mountain West Conference Preseason All-Mountain West team in August.
Lauterwasser says the honor is nice, and this year she is ready to continue her role as a leader and good teammate. “I’ve changed my mindset from me to we…this year I am more focused on how the team does. That’s been something I’ve really been working on.”
Senior Middle Blocker Sarah Holbomb was named All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2024. She also will return for the Brown and Gold this season. Wyoming as a team, was picked to finish in a tie for 6th place with UNLV.
Second-year Head Coach Kaylee Prigge said, “These honors for these two really set the tone as far as our program being blue collar and physical in the trenches.”
She continued, “Five true Freshman make up a very, very talented class…we are very early in the season so we are looking forward to seeing who steps into big roles.”
While the coach is excited to see how the team plays together, the players say they are thrilled to be playing in front of Wyoming’s fans inside the newly renovated UniWyo Sports Complex.
Lauterwasser said, “I love it, It’s insane. My family always comments about how loud it is with the band there and the amount of fans that attend is incredible. It’s really a blessing to have Laramie come out no matter what our record is rain or shine…they are always going to be there and show up for us. I think that encourages us to be out in the community…it has made the experience here really amazing.”
Prigge added, “Our gym is as competitive as ever right now, we have added a lot of depth in every position. We added five true freshman to the roster. We are excited to start our season Saturday the 23rd, when we head to Cheyenne to play Denver (Exhibition) at LCCC. Then one week (after that), we play the "Rumble in the Rockies" in the AA. We look forward to a great 2025 fall campaign.”
She added how exciting it will be to play that tournament in front of a bigger crowd in the Arena-Auditorium.
Noteable matches this season include the Texas Christian University Tournament, “The Fight in the Fort” in Fort Worth, Texas on September 11th and 12th. The Cowgirls will face a Big 12 powerhouse and a South Eastern Conference team on the same day; Missouri and TCU.
Lauterwasser says the Cowgirls have played two teams in one day before, but none as tough as The Tigers and The Horned Frogs.
Coach Prigge added, “TCU and Missouri are on the same day…we really need to see where we are at, this team has been building over the last two and half years, towards a tougher team year after year. So they have earned the right to play in big matches…so we are in a good spot.”
Lauterwasser added the annual Border War match vs. CSU (September 25th) as being a favorite, but this year, she has one particular date circled on the schedule. “Grand Canyon University will be a fun addition to the conference. My younger sister goes to GCU…she will be there but wearing Wyoming gear, obviously.”
That match is scheduled for October 2nd in Phoenix, Arizona.
The University installed a new playing surface in the UniWyo Sports Complex in the off season called Taraflex. The first official match on that surface will be against Long Beach State University on September 18th.
