Cowgirl Soccer Outshoots Weber State 19-6, Come Away With First Loss

LARAMIE, Wyoming – The University of Wyoming soccer team got off to a dream start on Thursday against Weber State. However, it didn’t conclude in jubilation for the Cowgirls.
The Wildcats rallied for a 2-1 victory at the Madrid Sports Complex. The result drops the Pokes to 2-1-0 on the season, and Weber State improves to 1-1-1 on the year.

“For us, it was a game where we could have gotten more than one,” head coach Josh Purdum said. “That was a bit disappointing. We created chances. We were good between the boxes. We just weren’t gritty enough and weren’t strong enough to get the second one.”
It took Wyoming until the dying seconds to score in their last match at home a week ago. It couldn’t have been more different on Thursday.
Maddie Burr headed in a cross from Alyssa Glover in the third minute that staked the Cowgirls to the early advantage. It was Burr’s second score in as many games and Glover’s first assist of the year. Glover now has 50 career points, which is fifth in school history.
Weber State responded in the 31st minute. Oakley Anderson cleaned up some sloppy play from Wyoming to level the match, 1-1.
Less than three minutes later, Nellie Brooks seized the lead for the Wildcats. She scored off a feed from Lily Blum in the 34th minute that gave the game its final tally.
The Pokes outshot Weber State, 19-6; however, it was even at 5-5 on shots on goal. Hadley Linder accounted for a game-high five shots, one of which was on frame.
Cowgirls’ goalkeeper, Haley Bartel, collected a trio of saves, the last of which was an acrobatic one that kept Wyoming within striking distance midway through the second half. Wildcats’ goalkeeper, Lauren Butorac, logged four saves.
The Cowgirls take a week off before one of the biggest games in the history of the Madrid Sports Complex. They host South Carolina on Aug. 27 at 4 p.m.
