Cowboys Set to Host Colorado State for 117th Edition of Border War on Saturday

UW to wear Cowboys & Coal Jersey – Fans encouraged to Wear Black

ARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 25, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowboys will host the Colorado State Rams on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. inside War Memorial Stadium for the 117th edition of the Border War.

 

The Cowboys will wear special Cowboys & Coal jerseys against Colorado State on Saturday in the annual Border War contest. Wyoming Athletics partnered with the Wyoming Mining Association for a special jersey that that honors the State of Wyoming's rich coal mining history. The game will also feature pregame and in-game salutes to the coal mining industry.


Fans are encouraged to wear black to the Border War contest against Colorado State. The Brown and Gold Outlet has Cowboys & Coal gear at their locations in Laramie and Cheyenne and online on the link here.

Notes on the Cowboys

 

Cowboys & Coal: The Adizero Electric Jersey produced by Adidas and designed by Wyoming Athletics is black and white and will feature script font that spells out Wyoming on the chest. The main feature of the jersey is a coal print on the lower part of the jersey and top of the pants. The coal print represents pieces of coal, as the State of Wyoming leads the nation in coal production. It is joined by the Adidas logo on the left and Mountain West logo on the right. The player’s name will be joined on the back of the jersey along with a Steamboat logo. The stripe on the pants will be both white and dark grey and will be joined by logos. All marks on the jersey have a charcoal gray outline. The helmet by Riddell will feature a white stripe down the middle along with a white Steamboat logo. The color of the helmet is ultra-flat black with a standard black dipped facemask and a black chinstrap.

 

Staff Change: University of Wyoming head football coach Jay Sawvel announced during his weekly press conference on Monday that wide receiver coach Jovon Bouknight will take over the offensive coordinator duties moving forward. Assistant coach Jay Johnson will remain on staff in an analyst role.

 

Border War: The Cowboys and Rams will meet for the Border War on Saturday. The rivalry is currently sitting at 13-13 during the Mountain West portion of the series, as it marks the last time the two will meet as members of the Mountain West Conference.

 

Big Day for Westland: Defensive end Tyce Westland had a big day for the Cowboys at Air Force. He recorded a career-high 14 tackles in the game including 10 solo tackles. His 14 tackles was the most by a defensive lineman since Mike Purcell had 16 against Cal Poly in 2012. His 14 tackles were the most by a Cowboy since Chad Muma had 17 against Utah State in 2021.

 

TFL’s for Westland: Defensive end Tyce Westland added a pair of tackles for loss against Air Force. He is now tied for the team lead with 5.5 tackles for loss along with nose tackle Ben Florentine. He has a tackle for loss in four-straight games for the Brown and Gold. He has 33 total tackles to rank fourth on the team.

 

Kellman Finds Endzone Again: Running back Terron Kellman found the endzone on his first carry of the contest against Air Force for touchdowns on back-to-back carries after scoring the game winner against San Jose State. He added another score in the contest for a career-high, as he leads the Cowboys this season with four rushing scores.

 

Sargent Making Plays: Wide receiver Jaylen Sargent recorded a season-high five receptions for a season-high 65 yards against Air Force. Over his last two contests, Sargent has eight catches for 104 yards. He is second on the team with season with 15 catches for 192 yards.

 

Harris Continues to Shine: Wyoming running back Samuel “Tote” Harris continues to have a solid freshman season. He recorded 83 rushing yards and added a career-high four catches for 42 yards. He leads the cowboys in rushing this season with 398 yards on 69 carries. He also has 13 catches for 158 yards on the season. He added three chunk plays at Air Force and leads the team this season with 13 of them rushing and three through the air.

 

Fitz Magic: Wide receiver Michael Fitzgerald II added his second score of the season at Air Force and now has a touchdown in back-to-back contests. He recorded a season-high three catches at Air Force. Over his last two games, Fitzgerald has four catches for 63 yards with a pair of scores.

 

Another New Target: True freshman tight end Kyle Frendt added his first career reception at Air Force for 12 yards. He is now the 19th different player to record a reception for the Cowboys this season. He was one of 10 players to have a catch at Air Force, as UW has had quarterback Kaden Anderson found 10 or more receivers in a game in four-straight contests.

 

Chisom in the Backfield: Defensive end Chisom Ifeanyi added a strip sack for the Cowboys against Air Force for his second sack of the season and the 14th of his collegiate career. He now has 19.5 tackles for loss in his collegiate career. He leads the Cowboys this season with eight qb hurries.

 

Anderson on Point: Wyoming quarterback Kaden Anderson completed 23-of-29 passes for a career-high completion percentage of 79.3 percent at Air Force. It was the best passing percentage by a Cowboy since Andrew Peasley was 20-of-25 for the Cowboys against Toledo in the Arizona Bowl in 2023. Anderson is averaging 23.6 completions per game over his last three games and is averaging 256 passing yards in those three contests.

 

Defensive Backfield: The safety duo of Andrew Johnson and Jones Thomas returned to the field for the Cowboys at Air Force. They combined for 15 tackles in the contest. The duo ranks third and fifth on the team in tackles this season with Johnson adding 38 and Thomas adding 60. They both have added three pass breakups this season.

 

About Colorado State: The Rams are coming off a 31-19 loss to Hawaii last Saturday night at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins. Colorado State’s offense was limited to 106 total yards in the first half with freshman Javion Kinnard’s 91-yard punt return for a touchdown providing the only score for the home team as it trailed 24-7 entering the fourth quarter before a late rally.


CSU quarterback Jackson Brousseau has completed 61.6% of his passes for 741 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions since replacing Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi as the starter. Running backs Jalen Dupree, Lloyd Avant and Justin Marshall have combined for 949 yards rushing and six touchdowns. Wide receiver Armani Winfield leads the team with 19 receptions for 261 yards and two touchdowns and tight end Rocky Beers has added 10 receptions for 94 yards and three touchdowns.


Defensively, the Rams have allowed an average of 27.0 points (89th in the FBS) and 409.7 yards (110th) per game this season. CSU sophomore linebacker Owen Long leads the FBS in tackles with 93 (13.3 per game).


CSU leads the all-time series with Wyoming 60-51-5. During the 78 consecutive annual meetings since the 1946 season, the Cowboys lead 46-33-0. Since the Bronze Boot was introduced as the rivalry trophy in 1968, UW has a 31-26 advantage. Mountain West in July. The Pokes will open the 2026 season at CSU as a non-conference opponent.
