Cowboy Offense Struggles Against One of Nation’s Top Defenses in 24-7 loss at SDSU

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Nov. 1, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowboy offense struggled against one of the nation’s top defenses in a 24-7 loss to San Diego State on Saturday evening inside Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif. Wyoming falls to 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in MW with the Aztecs improving to 7-1 and 4-0 in conference play.
"First of all, credit to Coach (Sean) Lewis and their team,” UW head coach Jay Sawvel. “That’s a really good football team that we played tonight. There’s a reason they have the record they have. There was going to be a narrow window, narrow lanes to win that game. When you get to that the team that makes the least mistakes wins and we made too many mistakes tonight that gave them points and took points away from us."
The Cowboys recorded only 185 yards of total offense on the night with 96 through the air and 89 on the ground. The Wyoming defense allowed 390 yards on the night with the Aztecs rushing for 194 yards and passing for 194 yards.
The Wyoming defense saw a pair of redshirt freshman record their first career interceptions in defensive tackle Tegen Seeds and safety Justin Taylor. It marked the first interception by a defensive tackle since the 2023 season. Linebacker Ethan Stuhlsatz recorded 10 tackles to lead the team.
"I thought defensively we did what we needed to do to win the game, to give us a chance to win the game,” Sawvel said. “The stop right before halftime, I’m out there telling them make sure this turns into a field goal, don’t give them a touchdown. Evan Eller is like, we’re going to get a takeaway and then we got a takeaway. With the way we were playing (defensively) in the third and fourth quarter we gave ourselves enough opportunities to potentially have the ball, kick field goals and get it to a one score game. We made too many mistakes offensively and that’s kind of where we’re at and it’s a frustrating thing."
UW offense was paced by wide receiver Michael Fitzgerald with three catches for 46 yards. Quarterback Kaden Anderson threw for 93 yards but recorded three interceptions. Quarterback Landon Sims rushed for 52 yards but was injured in the first half.
The Cowboys tallied a touchdown on the opening drive on a pass from Sims to Sam Scott from three yards. It was part of a nine-play, 75-yard drive that featured a 37-yard rush from Sims to set up the score.
An interception by the Aztecs set up their first score of the game in the closing minutes of the first quarter for a 7-7 contest. Another turnover by the Cowboys ended up with an Aztec field goal for a 10-7 contest with 10:52 left in the opening frame.
San Diego State would take a 17-7 lead into the half on a seven-yard run from Jordan Napier, as the two teams would combine for five turnovers in the opening frame.
Neither team could add points in the third quarter of the contest.
