LARAMIE, Wyo. - Graduate tight end John Michael Gyllenborg will not suit up for the Cowboys in today’s conference opener against UNLV, sources tell Pokes News. A UW official confirmed the news minutes ago. The Leawood, Kansas, native sustained a leg injury in practice and will be sidelined tonight.
The news comes as a setback for Wyoming’s offense, which was expecting to have the veteran back in action after he previously battled a bruised leg suffered against Utah earlier this season. Earlier this week, before the latest injury, Gyllenborg shared his optimism about returning and reflected on healing and the upcoming non-conference stretch.
“As a competitor, it’s been really tough and to have to watch the team knowing how bad they want to be out there and those sorts of things,” Gyllenborg said. “But I’ve been proud of the boys and how hard they’re working and the things that we’re improving on, specifically with the tight end room. I think the tight end room has been doing a great job. We’re just continuing to get better and continuing to try and execute things we need to execute.”
Gyllenborg spoke about how the bye week came at just the right time for both himself and his teammates. “I think bye week came at a good time for us. I know at this point in the year, four games in after a long camp, everyone’s banged up in some kind of way. And I think to mentally be able to turn off the switch for a day or two was good for everyone and definitely get some extra rehab,” he said. “I really do think bye week came at a perfect time going right in the conference.”
Though targets for Gyllenborg have been limited so far this season, John Michael stressed that his focus remains on the team’s success. “As far as those kind of things, I don’t really worry about whether I’m getting the ball or not. I’m just trusting in the staff and doing what’s asked of me and those things will come,” he said. “Whether that brings me one, three, five, 10 targets, doesn’t matter to me, as long as we’re putting up points.”
The Cowboys will now have to move forward without their experienced tight end against UNLV, leaning more heavily on the depth Gyllenborg praised. Kickoff is set for 5 PM this evening at War Memorial Stadium.
